Black boys and men often carry profound forms of grief that go unrecognized in clinical, educational, and community settings. Exposure to community violence, systemic racism, family disruption, incarceration, and premature loss creates a complex grief landscape that is frequently misinterpreted as anger, resistance, or disengagement.
The pathologizing of Black behavior has deep roots in American history and continues to influence how grief is expressed and understood today. As a result, professionals may respond to behavior without recognizing the loss and trauma underneath it.
This interactive session introduces participants to a trauma-competent lens for recognizing and responding to grief among Black boys and men. Drawing on neuroscience, culturally grounded practice, and lived community insight, participants will learn how grief can appear in behavioral, relational, and emotional patterns and explore practical strategies for engaging Black males in ways that promote dignity, connection, and healing.
