With the resurgence of multi-generational household living and the diversity of family financial practices as resilience mechanisms, social workers need to employ a family-systems approach to address financial concerns.

The session will begin by defining financial interdependence (FI) through two complementary lenses: a state of being in which financial decisions are made in consideration of both a financial goal and the impact on one's social relationship(s) and the practice of sharing money, material goods, trade, etc. as an expression of mutuality.

It will establish that this framework applies universally—from the suburban couple navigating joint finances, to adult children helping aging parents, to immigrant families sending remittances abroad.

Drawing from interdependence and complexity theories, participants will explore how financial decisions emerge from complex interactions within social networks. Through individual work and group discussions, participants will explore their own experiences with FI and practice using the CFPB’s Money Circle Tool Kit with a case study to identify FI-related values and behavior patterns and map influential relationships in clients' financial lives.

This will provide participants with a structured approach to engaging clients in conversations about sensitive financial relationships. Participants will explore how to navigate topics such as goal setting, value differences, financial trauma, problem money behaviors, and family communication from an interdependence-informed perspective.
