In highly stressful or traumatic situations, people may experience, witness, or fail to prevent events that contradict deeply held moral beliefs. These traumatic experiences can lead to moral injury, which has a significant impact on a survivor’s mental and spiritual health.

Moral injury and the existential wounds that result from these experiences can lead to intense anger, shame, avoidance, and despair, which can substantially complicate trauma treatment. Failure to address moral injury can lead to somatic symptoms, social withdrawal, and risky or self-destructive behaviors.

This presentation will provide an overview of moral injury, including how to identify its most common signs and symptoms. Participants will also gain an introduction to research and interventions aimed at treating the existential wounds that result from moral injury.

This training will be led by Michelle Perry, PhD. Dr. Perry is the founder and CEO of the Center for Trauma, Stress, and Anxiety. In addition to completing many neuropsychology rotations, a large portion of Dr. Perry's clients are Active Duty Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders working on healing from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Completion of this training is worth 1 CEU credit for counselors, social workers, and psychologists in the state of Maryland. If you are outside of the state of Maryland, the CEU credits will count if your licensing board accepts American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation. If you are unclear, please check with your licensing board to make sure they accept APA accreditation.
