Participants will explore common perinatal mental health concerns, risk factors, and warning signs, including how stress and trauma can affect the body and behavior. The session will review evidence-based screening approaches, barriers to care such as stigma and access challenges, and practical strategies for connecting individuals and families to effective treatment, support, and local resources.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the current landscape of perinatal mental health in Maryland.
Analyze clinical presentations, risk factors, and diagnostic features of perinatal mental health disorders, including culturally influenced and somatic symptom patterns.
Identify and analyze common barriers to accessing perinatal mental health care, including stigma, provider- and system-level challenges, and logistical obstacles, to inform strategies for improving care delivery.

Implement guideline-supported screening and suicide risk assessment practices to support early detection across prenatal, postpartum, and pediatric settings.

Apply evidence-based intervention strategies, safety responses, and referral pathways to improve perinatal mental health outcomes statewide


This training is designed for behavioral health professionals, clinicians, and community partners seeking to strengthen their understanding of perinatal mental health conditions and suicide risk during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
