It is estimated that about 17% of youth experience a mental health disorder.  Psychotropic drugs are a widely used modality to manage symptoms and improve functioning in this population.  While they may be very effective, they may carry significant short- and long-term risks.  Patients, family members, and advocates all play a key role in ensuring safe and effective treatment with psychotropic drugs.  This seminar will provide an overview of the drug classes used to treat behavioral health disorders in youth and identify strategies to mitigate treatment risks.

Learning Objectives:

Identify by generic name, trade name, and pharmacologic class, the drugs used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders in youth, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
Explain the expected outcomes of treatment with psychotropic drugs in youth.
Describe common side effects of psychotropic drugs in youth and the common strategies used to minimize them.
