Depression is among the most prevalent psychological disorders across the lifespan and oftentimes represents a major source of individual suffering and impairment. The high rates of co-occurring psychopathology with depression (including generalized and specific anxieties), make its clinical presentation a challenge for both the client and the mental health provider. The impact of childhood depression often carries into adulthood, and can generate other concerns and significant obstacles to general well-being. Thus, providing evidence-based treatment in childhood represents a public health priority.

This workshop will focus on a variety of empirically supported treatment strategies to treat depression and associated mood disorders. Dr. Collado will present on evidence-based interventions to overcome depression including cognitive therapy, behavioral activation, skills from acceptance and commitment therapy, and interpersonal therapy (under a cognitive/behavioral framework). Dr. Collado will also review how behavioral activation may represent a treatment that is culturally-responsive.

Learning Objectives
Review the prevalence of depression in childhood/adolescence as well its homotypic and heterotypic continuity into adulthood.
Discuss empirically supported treatments to target depression in children and adolescents.
Explain the theoretical foundations of cognitive behavioral therapy and behavioral activation.
Demonstrate 3 concrete strategies to empower children and adolescents to change their depressive thoughts and increase the availability of rewards in their environment.

Target Audience: Intermediate

Best suited for clinicians, as it covers foundational knowledge while offering practical strategies. Reviewing the prevalence and continuity of depression is essential for clinicians with some experience, reinforcing their understanding of childhood and adolescent depression. Introducing empirically supported treatments like CBT and behavioral activation assumes a basic familiarity with these approaches, while providing a deeper dive into evidence-based interventions.
