Day 1: Substance Use Conditions in Older Adults: Prevention, Intervention and Recovery Considerations

Date & Time: July 23rd, 2025 - Noon to 1:30 PM EST

Substance Use Conditions are more than disorders impacting youth and young adults. We are seeing an increasing frequency of substance use challenges in our older adult populations. We will explore the prevalence, prevention and familial facets as well as considerations for interventions, treatment and recovery for persons experiencing substance use challenges in older adulthood.

Learning Objectives:

Identify key considerations in respect to substance use conditions as being solely a condition in younger adults and examine the increased incidence of substance use conditions in older adult communities.
Explain the fundamental points on how societal negative perceptions of addiction impact the prevention, identification, treatment and recovery support from substance use conditions in older adults and their families in the healing process.
Develop opportunities to strengthen resources across the care continuum for older adults from prevention through treatment and recovery community support.

Day 2: Substance Use Conditions in Older Adults: Improving Support Moving Forward, a Provider and Community Discussion

Date & Time: August 6th, 2025 - Noon to 1:30 PM EST

This presentation is a companion to the prior presentation titled - Substance Use Conditions in Older Adults: Prevention, Intervention and Recovery Considerations. Attendance of the prior presentation recommended but not required. In response to an increased incidence of substance use conditions in older adults,  explore how we can support more effective interventions, treatment and recovery support as a service community.

This is an opportunity to engage in dialogue with others who are interested in improving services and support for our older adult communities with the goal of improving efforts moving forward.

Learning Objectives:

Define, through the facilitated discussion, common areas of interest across Region 3 (DE, DC, MD, PA, VA, WV) in supporting more effective care and support for our older adult community members.
Identify the progress in respect to substance use care and support among older adults and how we can work together to improve care to this vital population.
Develop insight into why prevention and early intervention that includes education to families and key community partner groups are vital to supporting more effective care with older adults moving forward.
