Why is it important to talk about ethics in social work? Ethics are the basic principles that guide social workers to make a positive impact through their decisions and actions. These established principles are especially relevant today as we respond to recent changes in practice and laws.

 This workshop will examine common ethical concepts relevant to social work practice including: Best Interests of the Client, Protection of the Vulnerable, Client Self-Determination, Privacy & Confidentiality, and Conflicts of Interest. Content will also include BSWE COMAR 10.42.03 Code of Ethics, NASW Code of Ethics, and Risk Management strategies for ethical practice.   

Learning Objectives

Distinguish the basic elements and terms used for ethical decision-making.  

Examine the use of statutes and regulations that govern practice in social work as well as the professional ethical code and the function served by an ethical code.  

Identify the common ethical concepts relevant to social work practice, including: Best Interests of the Client, Protection of the Vulnerable, Client Self-Determination, Privacy & Confidentiality, and Conflicts of Interest.    

Examine Risk Management strategies for ethical practice.
