This training focuses on the growing concern of suicide and substance misuse among older adults. It reviews current data, risk factors unique to this population, and the challenges posed by late-life mental health, physical illness, and social isolation. Participants will also learn about the misuse of prescription medications, alcohol, and cannabis in this age group and how to adapt clinical practices to effectively support older adults through tailored interventions.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the prevalence, risk factors, and unique considerations related to suicide and substance misuse among older adults.
Evaluate the impact of prescription medication misuse, alcohol, and cannabis use on physical and mental health outcomes in older adults.
Integrate age-appropriate, evidence-based interventions to reduce suicide risk and support substance use treatment in older adult populations.
