The Suicide Death Investigation Course© is two-day immersive workshop centered on the review of Medicolegal Death Investigation procedures related to mortality assessments and inquiries with a particular focus on cases involving suicides within healthcare and behavioral healthcare systems.

The course aims to provide participants with an understanding of how manners of death of classified, to acquire the skills and knowledge to conduct mortality reviews, death investigations or inquiries, to foster critical thinking abilities when completing death reviews, and enable them to comprehend the circumstances surrounding a death for drawing conclusions regarding suicide. 

Learning Objectives:

Analyze how knowledge of how the knowledge of death can aid health and behavioral healthcare systems in identifying and mitigating risks and enhancing prevention efforts as part of their formal quality improvement processes.


Define key concepts related to death and its clinical aspects.


Explain the importance of considering contextual factors and conditions surrounding an individual's death within the framework of health and behavioral healthcare systems.


Differentiate and classify the five different manners of death deaths, including homicide, accident, suicide, natural and undetermined.


Distinguish between expected, unexpected, medical, mistreatment or maltreatment, and suspicious death.
Describe the process of a “pending” death investigation and certification.


Differentiate between Coroner and Medical Examiner, determining jurisdiction of a death
Summarize the basics of medicolegal death investigations.


Describe and explain the incident management model typically employed in health and behavioral healthcare systems.


Apply evidence-informed processes in conducting administrative investigations effectively.
Construct relevant investigatory questions for administrative investigations.


Identify those at risk and recognizing associated factors.


Evaluate a provided example of a Suicide Death Investigation to assess the investigation procedures and processes used in determining the manner of death effectively.


Apply investigative processes to determine if a death is related to suicide.
