The last of the Baby Boomers are reaching retirement age, and Gen X is set to outnumber Baby Boomers in the workforce by 2028. Millennials are mostly in their mid-to-early career, and Gen Z’s are mostly just starting their professional lives. Each generational group has been shaped by different world events, directly impacting their intrinsic motivation, communication style and preference, and worldview.
Dissimilarities rooted in gender, gender identity, gender role expectations, racial, ethnic, and religious distinctions are also significant. These differences both enhance and challenge the supervisory process and supervisory relationship. How do we grow and capitalize on this knowledge to enhance communication and learning?
Learning Objectives: Through participation in this workshop participants will:
1. Increase knowledge of generationally mediated factors impacting the mindset of supervisors and supervisees.
2. Identify our own supervisory dialog defaults and improve knowledge of how these may be perceived by supervisees occupying different generational and social “buckets”.
3. Develop strategies for maximizing effective communication both within and across generational groups.
4. Consider best approaches for “growing” clinicians and new supervisors by capitalizing on what motivates them bearing in mind forces that may be impacting succeeding generations of social workers.
