Building on the success of the Spring 2024 "Navigating Dementia" education series, The Geriatrics & Gerontology Education and Research (GGEAR) Program at University of Maryland, Baltimore is hosting two important webinars that focus on critical aspects of providing care and service to older adults.

Elder Abuse: Recognizing and Responding to Abuse in Later Life"
Date and Time: Wednesday, November 13, 2024; 2:45pm-5:15pm
Learn what elder abuse is and understand its prevalence, particularly among vulnerable populations, including persons living with dementia. Explore the causes and conceptual framework of elder abuse, as well as the tactics used by perpetrators. Identify common barriers to providing effective intervention for victims of elder abuse. Understand the role of Adult Protective Services (APS) and the limitations they face in addressing elder abuse. Review case examples to discuss screening, reporting, and intervention strategies.

This session is critical for anyone who works with or cares for older adults, including those living with dementia since cognitive decline increases the risk of abuse and exploitation.

Thoughtful Hospitalization℠
Date and Time: Friday, December 13, 2024; 11:45am-3:15pm
This virtual interactive workshop offers professionals, caregivers, and people in the early stages of dementia the knowledge and confidence to minimize hospital risks and improve care outcomes.

Building on the themes from the Navigating Dementia series, this workshop focuses on managing hospital stays for older adults, especially those with chronic conditions or cognitive impairments. In this session, you will:
•    Learn to identify key factors leading to hospitalizations, manage medications, and plan actions to reduce hospitalization risks.
•    Practice effective communication with hospital staff, engage in discharge planning, and coordinate care transitions to ensure continuity of care.
