Bias in mental health practice is rarely a matter of anyone deciding to discriminate. It shows up in which symptoms get
explored and which get assumed, whose account is believed, which intake form has a box for your family, and which crisis
gets a clinician rather than a police officer.
This course moves past awareness and into examination. After clarifying the terms the field uses loosely and reviewing what the research shows about how bias operates and what it costs, participants work through twenty brief case studies drawn from patterns documented in the clinical and health-services literature. Cases are organized by ecological level — micro, mezzo, and macro — and span race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, weight, parenthood, disability, immigration status, and socioeconomic status.
