Teens are using more and more substances these days. The substances have become easier to get, easier to use, and sadly more deadly. However, treatment opportunities for adolescents have diminished since 2015. Fewer institutions are requiring the study of specific treatment interventions for adolescents and SUD. Therefore, there are fewer professionals in the field with the special skill set to engage adolescents in SUD treatment.

With young adult opioid overdose deaths at alarming rates over the past decade and the introduction of THC products into our communities, it is more important than ever to become better prepared to treat teens who are presenting with a substance use disorder.

Learning Objectives:

Discuss barriers to the treatment of adolescents.

Identify engagement strategies, starting with the assessment process.

Discuss specific adolescent SUD assessment strategies.

Review diagnosis and ASAM placement criteria.

Understand motivational interviewing principles, strategies, and tools.

Review experiential activities designed to engage adolescents.

Target Audience: Social Workers, LCPCs, and Psychologists and anyone interested in the topic.
