Hoarding is a compulsive behavior that involves much more than keeping excessive amounts of stuff. In this training we will look at the myths & misconceptions about hoarding, and how to differentiate between hoarding & other types of behaviors. Learn the diagnostic criteria for hoarding, along with understanding the brain differences which we believe underlie hoarding.

Explore the reasons people hoard, common symptoms of hoarding, and the impact hoarding has on both the individual and the family. We will then look at the options & challenges in treatment of hoarding disorder in this three-hour class.

Objectives:

  • Describe the difference between hoarding, collecting, & “being thrifty”
  • Identify the differences between hoarding disorder & OCD
  • Define clinical hoarding disorder and its diagnostic criteria according to the DSM-5
  • Understand the risk factors, reasons people hoard & how they justify their hoarding
  • Explain the brain & neural differences that we believe contribute to hoarding
  • Identify the impact of hoarding for individuals and their families & how we can support families
  • Learn the strategies & challenges for treatment for the person struggling with hoarding
