Morning Session: Sleep Matters: Improving Mental Health & Wellbeing Through Non-Medication Sleep Interventions

8:45 AM-12:00 PM ET

Behavioral Sleep Medicine (BSM) interventions, which are non-medication management strategies, can help clients presenting with certain sleep disorders.

In this workshop, attendees will learn how to assess for insomnia and delayed sleep phase syndrome, sleep disorders that are likely present in their client populations.  Evidence-based BSM treatments for insomnia and delayed sleep phase syndrome will be discussed in a way such that attendees will be able to take back tools to implement in their practice.  Specifically, attendees will be introduced to the gold standard for insomnia treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).

Strategies will also be discussed for managing delayed sleep phase, a circadian rhythm disorder that is especially prevalent in adolescents and early adults.

Afternoon Session: Unraveling Anxiety: Concrete Interventions for Treating Anxiety and Related Disorders

12:45 PM-4:00 PM ET

How do we help our clients move from worried to well? Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition in the United States in both adults and children. This workshop will present learners with a review of diagnostic formulation of assessment and key domains of anxiety assessment.

Specific anxiety-based screening and assessment measures will be shared as resources. Treatment approaches based in evidenced-based research will be included. After reviewing anxiety assessment, focus will shift to treatment approaches. The vicious cycle of anxiety will be reviewed, and strategies such as mindfulness and cognitive restructuring will be examined.

Core CBT targets and interventions will demonstrate the power of cognitive therapy to alleviate anxiety symptoms and distress. Additional concrete strategies such as distress tolerance, urge surfing, and self-compassion will provide clinicians with eclectic and empirically-validated treatment approaches to move your clients from worried to well.

Target Audience: Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Psychologists, Addictions Counselors, other mental health professionals.
